THE LIMOUSIN ADVANTAGE
Fullblood Limousin

THE BREED.

Is the high cost of feed, fuel and equipment making you see red?

The costs associated with raising cattle are a significant challenge for today’s cattlemen. The ability to minimize costs and maximize gain is something everyone is looking for.

Turn your red into green…use Limousin!

“The amount of feed required per unit of retail beef produced is the ultimate biologic measure of beef production efficiency. Limousin calves produced the same amount of trimmed retail product with roughly one-half as much feed from weaning to harvest as compared to Angus and Hereford calves.”

THE CARCASS.

LIMOUSIN CATTLE: LEADERS IN EFFICIENCY

According to research by the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Limousin cattle have demonstrated exceptional efficiency in muscle growth. Compared to other breeds, Limousin cattle exhibit higher dressing percentages, a greater proportion of retail product, and lower bone percentages, making them the most efficient breed for maximizing retail product gain (MARC, 1999).

CALVING EASE AND SURVIVAL RATES

Research conducted by the University of Georgia, Athens, in a four-breed diallel involving Simmental, Limousin, Polled Hereford, and Brahman beef cattle, revealed that Limousin dams consistently exhibited higher calving and weaning rates. Limousin dams were able to deliver heavier calves with reduced calving difficulty and higher survival rates, contributing to overall herd productivity and profitability.

ADVANCEMENTS IN CARCASS DATA COLLECTION

In a groundbreaking collaboration between the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF), International Genetic Solutions (IGS), and Feedlot Health Management Services, Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle are leading the way in collecting carcass data. This initiative aims to enhance the accuracy and predictability of carcass trait EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) by incorporating over 45,000

Optimizing Success:

THE BREED OF CHOICE FOR SAVVY PRODUCERS.

In practical terms, Limousin cattle consistently outperform other breeds in terms of yield. For instance, studies conducted by MARC in 1994 found that Limousin cattle, with similar live weights as Angus and Hereford breeds, produced approximately 100 pounds more close-trimmed retail product. Furthermore, when compared to Gelbvieh, Simmental, and Charolais breeds, Limousin cattle weighing 100 to 130 pounds less produced equivalent quantities of retail product (MARC, 1994).

Mark Anderson, Executive Director of NALF, highlights the significance of this endeavor, emphasizing its potential to improve genetic predictions for carcass traits. With ongoing contributions of carcass phenotype records, Limousin and Lim-Flex breeders gain access to unparalleled data, enabling them to make more precise breeding and selection decisions.
